The Highlife Hangout
An adventure playground for the whole family
Our clients in Berkshire wanted to create a unique and adventurous outdoor space where the entire family could relax, play, and connect with nature. The brief was clear: design a magical woodland retreat that combined excitement with comfort—an immersive experience that would make the most of their property’s mature trees and natural landscape.
We envisioned The Highlife Hangout as an interconnected world of adventure, suspended amongst the treetops. At the heart of the design is a stunning treehouse tower, complete with a bespoke seating area and a fully equipped kitchenette—offering a relaxed space for casual entertaining in the canopy.
Surrounding the central tower is a series of elevated tree decks, rope bridges (including a thrilling 13-metre span), and zip wires, creating an adventurous route through the woodland that’s fun for both children and adults alike. These elements encourage playful exploration while remaining sympathetic to the natural surroundings.
the design process
Outdoor adventure abounds
From the main treehouse, a set of shorter rope bridges leads to a spacious, decked platform nestled deeper into the woods. This area serves as a social hub for outdoor gatherings and opens onto one of the most enchanting features of the project: a giant tree net outdoor cinema. Suspended among the trees, this space oers an unforgettable viewing experience— perfect for enjoying a favourite film under the stars, wrapped in blankets and surrounded by rustling leaves.
Careful attention was paid to preserving the woodland’s natural beauty. All platforms and features were designed to weave gently through the existing trees, with minimal ground disturbance.
The Highlife Hangout is now a beloved woodland escape for the whole family—a place to relax, play, entertain, and make memories. From the exhilaration of zip wires and rope bridges to the serenity of sunset movie nights among the trees, it’s a space that captures the spirit of adventure and the beauty of nature in perfect harmony.
